Parliamentarians from all around the world will be in Bangkok for the 122nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to be held from 27 March to 1 April, 2010.The Assembly and its related meetings will take place at the Centara Bangkok Convention Centre. Thailand has hosted the IPU Assembly and Conference twice before – the 45th Assembly in 1956 and the 78th IPU Assembly in 1987.
Established in 1889, the Geneva-based IPU is the international organization of parliaments and works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the establishment of representative democracy. It has 151 Members and 8 Associate Members.
On the agenda at the 122nd Assembly is a high-level debate on the global political, economic, and social situation.
Parliamentarians will also focus on promoting South-South and Triangular Cooperation with a view to accelerating achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Also to be discussed is the role of legislators in the global fight against organized crime, in particular drug trafficking, illegal arms sales, human trafficking, and cross-border terrorism, as well as topics such as the role of parliaments in fulfilling the Convention of the Rights of the Child and a panel discussion on Preserving the World’s Oceans.
Two other significant items on the agenda are youth participation in the democratic process and the growing numbers of women parliamentarians being elected worldwide.
Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Mr. Suraphon Svetasreni said that, “Thailand, as a free and open democracy, is very glad to be hosting the IPU Assembly for the third time.
As elected representatives of the people, parliamentarians have a very important role to play in nation-building. We look forward to welcoming all the legislators. The discussions and debate during the 122nd Assembly will go a long way towards building democratic traditions worldwide”.
