Some programs everyone should have

There are some programs that everyone should have on their computer because eventually you are going to need one or more of them. If you use the Internet and download files then the different types will need to be handled, opened, viewed or played. Everyone has their list of favourites. I have seen lists that include products like iTunes and McAfee that I would never allow on any computer of mine.

If you have noticed Adobe’s reader is slow, a better alternative, the Foxit Reader, is available for free at www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader.

Something I use often is a program to convert compressed files into their normal versions. My favourite product to do this is WinRAR but since that costs money the next best option is 7Zip which you can find at http://www.7-zip.org.

This product will allow you to unpack the following formats ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MSI, NSIS, RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR and Z. With this program installed you will be able to unpack just about anything you grab from the net. You will also be able to create your own .ZIP files.

Next on my list in no particular order or preference is a replacement for the regular Notepad that comes with Windows. Called Notepad Plus,

you can find it at http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm, or do a search in your favourite browser. This version will support programming templates, tabbed open files and remembers your last session.

If you use PDF files at all, you will have noticed that Adobe's reader is slow. A better alternative is the Foxit Reader, available for free from http://www.foxitsoftware. com/pdf/reader/. It works as a plug-in for your browser or in a standalone mode. The company also has some nice PDF editor products but these will cost you some cash.

For playing video and music files, there are two options I'd recommend. The first I have told you about before; the K-lite Mega Codec Pack which is available at http://www.codecguide.com/download - mega.htm. It comes with Windows Media Player Classic and plays anything I have ever wanted it to. The second option is the VLC media player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ that also supports many video formats, including DVD, CDs and VCDs.

For still images you can get the FastStone Image Viewer 4.1 from http://www.faststone.org/fsviewerdetail.htm. This is an image browser, converter and editor product that will allow you to view your digital images, manipulate them and supports a number of RAW camera formats. Check out the feature set for yourself.

To save yourself some money, get OpenOffice instead of the Microsoft suite. I've talked about this one before and you can get it from http://www.openoffice.org.

When it comes to communicating to cover all the bases, try Pidgin from http://www.pidgin.im. This is a chat consolidation product that will allow you to access all your accounts from the same place including Yahoo, Google, IRC, MSN chat clients along with a lot of others. If you then add Skype (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb)this will cover you for all your text and video chatting needs.

Finally in the ten you can try Piriform CCleaner 2.2 from http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner. It is handy to clean your registry out every now and then to get rid of the entries that are no longer pointing to anything useful or to clean out your browser history. This product can do these things for you.

All of the utilities mentioned above with the exception of WinRAR are freeware products. You can download and use then for free. Some of them ask if you want to donate and if you find the utility useful, then why not do so? Some of you may also believe that all you need to do is download and install them and that is it. Remember that in many areas things change, get updated, and new versions of things like codecs are created. Remember that for all these products there will be new versions and you should check occasionally to get the latest one. If you find a better product than one I have listed, then let me know and I'll pass it along to the rest of the readers.

Industry news

Australia has backed off from Internet-filtering proposals. The public reasoning is that there are other things that need to be done first. The reality is that the system would not have worked as proposed. The broadband connectivity plan in the same country is still waiting for the implementation plan, delayed perhaps because the scheme is unfeasible and would never make any money to pay for itself.

Showing just how marketing and brand loyalty are a buying factor, compare the iPad with the Fusion Garage JooJoo. Both about the same price in the UK, the latter is based on the Atom operating system. The JooJoo comes with a 12" screen, has multi tasking and 768 HD playback. It contains a 4GB solid state drive, camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and has a fingerprint-resistant coating. It also supports just about anything you want as far as application support. Apple claims to have sold over 1 million iPads - a figure I doubt, but compared to the under 100 JooJoos sold to date as I type this, the branding seems to make all the difference.

AMD has a six-code CPU out, the Phenom II X6. The good, definitely non-Intel news is that you won't need a new motherboard with the AM3 and AM2+ socket motherboards supporting the new CPU. Not that it matters much any more, but the two chip versions come in 2.8 and 3.2 GHz versions. They work with the AMD 890FX chipset which provides for 6Gb/sec SATA with many of the available motherboards supporting USB 3.0. There are a bunch of other features you can check out on AMD's website (http://www.amd.com).

HP and Palm working together - well, one buying the other out, at least. HP wants to get into the phone business and will do so based on the Palm OS. From there the plan appears to be to then move into the webOS tablet business. This marks a major shift for HP into the mobile user market. Yes, they already have iPaq smartphones that are based on the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system and it is also developing a tablet PC based on Windows 7. The acquisition gives HP some flexibility in terms of suppliers and the luxury of choice.

Delivery times are up in the air because HP is waiting for the deal to be settled and that is likely to happen at the end of July. All we know at the moment is that they will be building both home and work units. HP believed that with them behind the Palm brand, things will pick up for both companies. HP also happens to provide the infrastructure for eight of the top 10 wireless carriers in the world so they can leverage those relationships as well. How this will pan out is anyone's guess, so it will be interesting to see where HP is 12 months from now.

Sony just can't seem to get it right these days. The latest is a class-action lawsuit against Sony for "downgrading" the PS3. It all started when Goerge Hotz worked out how to jailbreak the console leveraging on the Linux installation. Sony replied by announcing they would disable other OS support, i.e. Linux. This was of course to placate the film and game makers. Sony's reason was for "security purposes".

There are two issues here one is that someone will just find another way around the "security" and the second is that annoying your customer base is not a great way to increase sales.

Time to consider Chrome

Time to consider Chrome

Google's browser has overcome a difficult start and is now a serious contender

  • Published: 12/05/2010 at 12:00 AM
  • Newspaper section: Database

Almost exactly three years ago, in a discussion about browsers, I correctly back-handed Google Chrome as pre-beta test software masquerading as the real deal - crippled, featureless, even buggy.

Using Google Chrome is like carrying a full-fledged translating program around with you. As soon as the program detects a different language, it offers to make a full translation of the web page.

So between 2007 and today, the Google dweebs and engineers have had their heads down. And they have turned a children's riding pony into a thoroughbred, a browser excellent enough for geeks, but so good even your mother could use it.

I was going to start this piece by writing, "If you are considering changing your browser... " but on second thoughts, that's wrong.

Consider changing your default browser. By all means give it good thought, but do consider your options. I am not bashing the very good Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer (IE) or even Apple Safari. Rather, I want everyone to be aware that there is another serious player.

If you don't use a browser for much more than reading a few news sites and email, then IE, the world's favourite browser, is fine. Windows will pamper it with the proper updates and all, no problem.

Up at the other end of the spectrum, if you have piled on the power-user's add-ons and macros for Mozilla Firefox or Opera, and spend 90 per cent of your computer time inside it, you may decide quickly to give the Google browser a miss for now. And, of course, a few of you use fringe browsers for your own excellent reasons - Safari because you also own an Apple Mac, say, or Slim Browser for the terrific organisation of multiple website groups.

One thing, though - do install and use Chrome once in a while. Its speed alone makes it useful for those one-time hits you have to make at this or that site.

But if you're just in the middle, mostly using a browser that's okay (and no better) and you'd like everything on the web to happen more quickly and efficiently, you'll do yourself a big favour by trying out Google Chrome.

What caused me to mention the early versions of Google Chrome is one of the two overall features of the program: sheer, unrelenting speed. It is fast to load, quick to display web pages. It uses the same basic engine, WebKit, as Safari, which is, however, still only a half-decent browser under Windows.

Chrome is in my own eyeball tests over the past three years by far the fastest browser. Some of that is because of its design. Example: You want to do a web search. In Chrome, you just type your search where in other browsers you have to type "http://www.google.com". Search is always on in Chrome.

But after use of a couple of years, and with 25 or 30 websites open in individual tabs, Chrome is way faster at any new task than any other browser.

The second feature, and the reason that Chrome is now ready for prime-time consideration, is add-ons. Until recently, it didn't do them. Now it does, and Google geeks and fanboys are churning them out nearly as quickly as they do for Firefox.

Google Chrome add-ons are generally known as extensions. They work a lot like Firefox. There are websites dedicated to them (mychromeaddons.com and google.com/extensions are the most popular.) Find an app that does something you want, click to install it, and now you've got a Google Chrome browser that does everything plus something you like.

And Google builds in some of the add-ons. I recently updated my Google Chrome - this is the most painless process in all computerland, and other companies should adopt it. Anyhow, I updated my Chrome and I was looking through some foreign language sites, when I suddenly noticed a simple dropdown menu asking me if I would like to translate the Chinese newspaper I was looking at.

The Google translation service has been built into the browser. As soon as you happen on a web page that is not the default language you picked for operating Windows, Chrome automatically asks if you want a translation.

Now: The Thai-English translation is, to be kind, barely adequate. Other languages, Google handles somewhere between "okay" and "not bad". But it is far better than no translation at all if you're trying to muddle through languages you absolutely cannot read.

The translation in Chrome takes a couple of seconds after you click to go, and the web page itself is entirely unchanged in appearance except that the Thai script (for example) is now in English.

Recent popular add-ons you can install include a very nice manager for open tabs (for people like me with dozens open at a time), adding the ability to use mouse gestures for browser commands, and open a new email message with a click.

This is what turned Firefox from a nice little browser into the program that injured the Microsoft browser monopoly. It is what will turn Chrome into an equally impressive performer.

If you've never tried it, by all means get the fast installation at chrome www.google.com.

Advanced in-car computer systems set to revolutionise road travel,

  • Published: 12/05/2010 at 12:00 AM
  • Newspaper section: Database

Sudden breakdowns of vehicles often cause road accidents and affect other motorists. But driving in the future could become safer and more pleasant as drivers benefit from a communication system enabling vehicles to communicate with each other.

A driver enjoys better safety as he can view the traffic conditions ahead and essential information along the route plus benefit from a warning system that notifies motorists when accidents occur.

This is known as the "Car Talk" pilot project, initiated by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec), with the collaboration of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB), King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).

Nectec Passakorn Prathombutr, Nectec's director of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) program, noted that the project focuses on active safety with an attempt to prevent accidents before they happen. Road accidents can be reduced through vehicles communicating with one another.

The "Car Talk" project comprises of two major communications systems: Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I). Inside the car is a computer terminal that allows the driver to see the conditions along the route he intends to take.

One feature of V2V that Nectec demonstrated at Science Park area is that once a number of vehicles are running the system, when an accident occurs and triggers sudden braking by one of the drivers, the vehicle will automatically send a signal to those who are following and transmit the image from the first to the last car. There is also a signal to remind drivers of speed limits, or to signify available car-parking spaces.

Also, Passakorn noted: "When at a blind corner where a driver cannot see other vehicles approaching, the radio frequency can sense them and will warn him in advance."

He then pointed out how, through the V2I system, the driver can communicate with the infrastructure such as the roads, traffic boards and information centres on the network.

For example, the traffic board can transmit the speed limit straight to the vehicle to alert the driver.

In the future, in the new models of electric cars, such as Nissan, there will be an IT system installed to notify drivers how far the vehicle can travel before a recharge is required, as well as inform the motorist of the locations of electric stations along the route.

The system also covers infotainment, where drivers or passengers can use the Internet while in the car or chat with other drivers nearby.

Passakorn admitted that the V2V system is the most ambitious project because every vehicle needs a computer to communicate with each other.

However, he said, with higher end mobile phones, V2V becomes more promising as drivers can use their in-car computers as mobile phones. "Today's mobile phone is more intelligent and functions like a computer," Passakorn said, noting that the research team is now developing applications and hopes that in the next few years, the V2V would be able to comply with Android phones.

The mobile wireless terminal, running on 2G/3G mobile cellular network and DSRC, enables the vehicle to communicate with other cars, the infrastructure or Internet network.

The V2I system sends signals between the vehicles and the infrastructure. By using the signal from a cellular base station, the system can track and run two-way communication. However, the users have to pay for airtime based on the package.

Passakorn demonstrated the function by riding through the Convention Centre, where the system scanned for vacant parking lots and notified the driver of this information.

One way to save costs is to eliminate the need for users to pay airtime charges by setting up nodes along roadsides to transmit information through Wi-Fi or active RFID.

Nectec has tested the V2I system of having the car communicating with the infrastructure with the example of having the vehicle run past a petrol station, triggering the information of fuel prices and available parking spaces to show up on the car monitor. The LBS (location-based service) will also display the location of the vehicle on a map and issue warnings when motorists approach intersections, pedestrian crossings and toll gates.

V2I already has potential in Thailand and interested parties can install it today because Nectec has employed the protocol of G-Box, an embedded system for two-way vehicle communications.

The director explained that G-Box is a new in-vehicle digital assistant system that collects and stores data such as location and speed, which is sent back via the GPRS mobile phone network to a central server. The device connects with an electronic control unit (ECU) and automotive controller area network so the device status is known at all times.

In the short term, the research team has developed the pilot system to prove in theory and in field tests that it works and they will further develop the program to apply to general vehicles, thereby increasing road safety and access to traffic information for motorists.

"The system can be both an additional component for after-market, or built-in," Passakorn said.

He added that in the long term, the team has the goal of upgrading the ITS industry in Thailand. "Instead of forever being a buyer, we should turn ourselves into a technology developer to reduce imports and maintenance, while also increasing road safety," he concluded.

Kitschy bags from trash

Kitschy bags from trash

This summer is a nightmare for Bangkokians. We've been trying hard to keep cool and live happily with the unusually hot weather, but the heated political unrest has ruined our already restless minds.

Cosmetic bag with mirror (250 baht).

It's no fun seeing bullets and blood on the streets, let alone the prolonged blockade of our popular shopping centres. We can point our fingers at the protesters, but when it comes to addressing global warming issues, everybody seems to be passive. Many even turn a blind eye to the fact that all human beings have long been hurting the environment in some ways - knowingly or unknowingly. That means it's directly our duty to help save the world before it's too late.

The campaign to promote a sense of environmental conservation began here a long time ago. Visible success is yet to be seen, though a growing number of people are more willing to embrace the 'go green' idea.

There are many guides on how to go green and one of the easiest approaches is for shoppers to opt for cloth shopping bags - a mandate to kick away the unnecessary use of disposable plastic carriers.

However, we have to admit that most cloth bags look unattractive, or merely too plain and dull. Recommended here, therefore, is the one-of-a-kind shop which makes a big difference. Trash Chic by Reflections offers a variety of much more attractive recycled bags of all kinds in nearly every design you can imagine.

Travel bag (450 baht).

Fascinating motifs you can hardly see elsewhere in the city can capture your heart. And what will draw a raised eyebrow from you is the fact that the bags here are made from sacks previously used for packing animal feed, flour, rice, seeds, chemical products, cement and even fertiliser. This explains well the unusual themes on their surfaces.

But don't worry that the bags may carry some residue from the above contents, as all of the containers are thoroughly cleaned until they look like new before the cutting and sewing processes are carried out.

Cheap doesn't always mean low quality. These quality recycled bags, likewise, come with very reasonable price-tags as they are created with the aim of helping to reduce trash and save the environment.

And don't be surprised if you come across copies of the chic items overseas in places like Japan, the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand and the US. The shop has exported the green products to serve environmentally conscious people there.

Protecting the environment can be an easy and enjoyable job for those who find pleasure in reusable items. Bearing all the unique features, the bags can be a proud companion and possibly elevate a sense of nature care among the people around you. RT

All items are available at the Trash Chic by Reflections shop, located on the 3rd floor of Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. The shop opens every Tue-Sun from 10:30am-7pm. For more information, call 088-010-8354.

Students develop 'massage shoes', paper-to-art objects and vacuum-packed rice,

The "3D Thai cartoons and paintings" project by a Nakhon Pathom school has won the Krung Thai Young Enterprise Scheme this year, beating more than 800 contestants across the country.

A group of students from Sri Wichai School in Nakhon Pathom won the Krung Thai Young Enterprise award this year for its 3D Thai cartoons project. The works were created with used paper.

Phalit Silpa Co, comprising seven student members from Sri Wichai School, turned used paper into a profit-making art business.

The students started the project with capital of only 500 baht each from their own pockets and borrowed another 7,000 baht from a school fund.

They have managed to turn that into a handsome profit of 6,499 baht each.

They converted the used paper into various artworks, including a wall artefact and a CD cover design.

The clean side of a piece of used paper was painted before being turned into a three-dimensional artefact.

The group turned out traditional Thai-style paintings and drawings such as a set of Thai cartoons and another set featuring fairground amusements popular among Thais in the past.

Many art pieces were also converted into computer graphics and printed on CD covers to make white backgrounds look more interesting.

Khao hang rice by the Occupational College in Buri Ram’s Nang Rong district.

The products were sold at shops, and directly to customers.

"My friends and I have learned to work as a team and solve problems together," said Kitti Mueandao, one of the students.

They want to carry on with the project after they leave school.

The first runners-up are a group of Montfort College students in Chiang Mai who developed foot-massaging shoes called "MC relax shoes".

The team was inspired by a shoe-making business run by the parents of one team member, and the booming health massage and spa business in their northern city.

They combined these two things into a pair of shoes which "massage" the feet.

Sasibut Yingyuenyong, a Mathayom 4 student and a Montfort College team member, said the foot-massaging shoes give wearers the sense that their feet are being massaged at five main spots on the foot.

First runners-up were the team from Montfort College who created these ‘‘MC relax shoes’’, which massage the wearer’s feet.

Aromatic oil extracts are released as they are walking to enhance the foot massaging effect. Customers include tourists, spa houses and athletes with strained foot muscles. Shops in Chiang Mai offer the shoes for sale with the help of parents at the school.

Also among the winners is khao hang rice, developed by the Occupational College in Nang Rong district of Buri Ram province.

The product is designed to be an alternative for those who are not impressed by tough khao klong rice but cannot afford to buy expensive khao klong ngok rice regularly.

Khao hang is made of ordinary rice soaked in water, steamed, milled and packed in a vacuum container.

This way of preparing rice is thought to preserve nutrients, soften the rice mass, and make it more aromatic.

Students from Khiri Mat Pitayakom school in Sukhothai demonstrate their pumpkin slicing machine.

The Nang Rong college team suggests that consumers mix their khao hang with ordinary rice when cooking, to save money.

Khao hang is based on local food preservation methods which the team studied, modernised and then turned into a business venture. It is sold in the school area.

The Krung Thai Young Enterprise Scheme serves as an experiment for students who want to find out if they would be interested in running a business of their own.

Students draft a business plan, are responsible for their own marketing, and do their own accounting, says Sumana Vonggapan, senior executive vice-president of Krung Thai Bank.

"Students will learn themselves if they really want to become entrepreneurs, and can pass on the knowledge they have gained to the community," she said.

Krung Thai gets 'responsible'

Krung Thai Bank has been trying to convince major firms to join its corporate social responsibility network in a bid to develop Thailand's intellectual capital.

Permanent secretary for finance Sathit Limphongphun presides over the Krung Thai competition’s awards ceremony.

Santi Vilassakdanont, chairman of KTB's Corporate Governance and Social and Environmental Responsibility Committee, said the bank expects other major companies to join its CSR initiative.

"We're ready to welcome them as it would make our effort more powerful," he said.

Mr Santi said if more companies joined the network, it would be able to reach more beneficiaries, especially students. The network would then become a driver of intellectual capital development in the country.

KTB has focused its efforts on developing intellectual capital through supporting educational, social and environmental programmes, as well as initiatives involving art, culture and sports, he said. The Krung Thai Dream Weaving Project has set aside 200 million baht to support the Office of Basic Education Commission's One District One Dream School Project for the past six years.

Santi: Looking for ethical partners

The project hopes to develop a model school in every district through staff training, particularly for information technology, and the acquisition of modern educational facilities such as sound labs.

The bank has also established the Krung Thai Dream Weaving toward Graduation Project.

Under this project, the bank provides 50,000 baht scholarships for students who meet the scheme's criteria.

To encourage students to develop their business skills, the bank held several contests, such as the Krung Thai Young Business Operators, Krung Thai Creative Vocation for Business and Krung Thai White Saplings Project.

For social and environmental development, the bank campaigns for environmental conservation and the reduction of energy usage through its Growing Green Project.

KTB supports an annual national arts contest. The bank buys the winning paintings and displays them at the Krung Thai Art Gallery in Yaowarat.

The bank has also built a sculpture park and training centre in Nakhon Ratchasima's Pak Chong district.

KTB has also set aside 60 million baht a year for the Thai national amateur boxing team. - Kannika Phonlakarn

Take a step into the house of the past

Take a step into the house of the past

Displaying everyday objects from years gone by, the House of Museums is an immensely interesting and surprisingly fashionable destination on the outskirts of Bangkok

'Keep it! Tomorrow's antique," is the short yet meaningful slogan inspired by Anake Nawigamune, one of the founders of the charming House of Museums on Sala Thammasop Road.

Though relatively small in size, the museum compound run by Anake and like-minded art connoisseurs who call themselves the Cultural Affairs Association encompasses an immense variety of exhibited items and acts as a real-life time machine to bring people back to the blissful years of their youth.

The concept behind the museum is simple, that the everyday objects of today will one day be priceless and rare relics from the past.

Anake said 70% of the items exhibited come from donors who continuously contribute their possessions of countless kinds - toys, books, film posters and copious amounts of outdated implements once deemed necessary in the daily lives of Thai people. He added that the rest of the items have been collected through almost two decades of buying and rescuing.

The three-storey structure on the outskirts of Bangkok was originally a storehouse for a huge and diverse stockpile of collectible memorabilia compiled by the group. It wasn't until nine years ago that the members decided that the unique items didn't deserve to fade over time in a concealed godown and made plans to share their treasures with the public. They held fundraising activities and events to cover the high cost of the site's renovation into the House of Museums, which officially swung its doors open in 2001.

The displays of assorted everyday items that were once overlooked narrate and shed light on the country's past. Children stepping into the ground floor of the three-storey main building are invariably enthralled with the toy corner, which boasts hundreds of cute and quaint clockwork toys, along with model robots and dolls in many shapes and hues.

Next to the toy zone is a replica of a traditional convenience store called Heng Huad. The store exhibits goods and commodities that are almost impossible to find now, each with stylish old-time packaging. The opposite side of the floor showcases the fascinating Jee Min Pharmacy.

Perfecting the time-warp ambience are a multitude of antique objects arranged and incorporated in vibrant time-referenced and life-like settings on the second floor. These include sections of a printing press, a barber shop, a book rental store, a photography studio, a miniature cinema showing black-and-white movies and a kitchen featuring ancient household utensils.

In a nearby corner there are displays of miscellaneous historical items such as old lemonade bottles, lanterns, wax-papered straws, vintage lozenge cases, toy cars as well as a cigarette card series, all offer younger generations a profound glimpse into how life used to be back in the days of their grandparents.

Equally interesting on the third floor is an old school classroom equipped with wooden desks, old textbooks and blackboards, and the office of a district official from an earlier era. Not to be missed are the vinyl displays of an old record store.

The stroll through the past is concluded with the museum's latest section set in an adjoining building - a replica of a riverside market which houses an atmospheric old-world coffee shop, Chinese gold shop and a dentist's workplace complete with an antique chair that looks as though it has seen thousands of patients come and go.

In a world where such things as time machines only exist in classic Hollywood movies, immersing yourself in the atmosphere of these old-world gems and, for a while, letting yourself be lost in the ambience of days gone by, can fulfil the sensation of being transported back through time.

The red-eared slider has become a popular aquatic pet

  • Published: 9/05/2010 at 12:00 AM

It took Mol Pratangtane almost seven years to see her miniature pet to full growth, and those years have been full of happiness and enjoyment. Day after day she developed a strong bond with her tiny turtle, a red-eared slider known as tao yee pun (Japanese turtle) in Thai. Her passion for this pet is still intense.

SWIMMERS: Red-eared sliders are popular among pet lovers who want to keep aquatic animals as pets.

"Normally, red-eared sliders grow very slowly. They start getting bigger when they are about two years old. So I had to wait a long time before I could appreciate it when fully developed. My turtle can grow up to a foot [30cm] long. It's worth the wait!" said the turtle lover.

Ms Mol said red-eared sliders are more popular with Japanese people than Thais, however their popularity in Thailand is growing. Due to its long and difficult-to-pronounce name, Thais tend to call the red-eared slider tao yee pun.

At present, it is a common sight to spot red-eared sliders in many pet markets. Though popular, this tiny turtle needs extra attentive care, but sadly only a few keepers realise this.

"I don't want to encourage people to keep tao yee pun if they have no time or basic knowledge about the species. All kinds of pets, whether small or large, need proper care.

"Any minor negligence can lead to an untimely death. So I don't support the idea of pet fashion," she said.

Ms Mol spent several years studying nature and the behaviour of animals before she decided to take on the responsibility of owning a pet that would likely stay with her for the entirety of its life expectancy.

"A red-eared slider is a freshwater turtle. It has a round green shell with patterns that look like wood. When it grows bigger, these patterns disappear and its shell will turn brown. Normally, the male is bigger than the female. Its tail is also longer. Its belly is rather curved and its nails more pint-sized," she explained.

Apart from keeping tao yee pun as a household pet, Ms Mol also engages in turtle breeding. Her pet shop serves as a learning centre where a group of turtle lovers can share and gain new knowledge of the species before adopting it.

"Red-eared slider lovers come in all ages. They like exotic pets. Some of my clients know everything about the turtle. They read a lot of textbooks about them. And we always share knowledge with each other," she said.

But for those who have no background in this species, there are many facts pet owners should know to prevent the abandonment of the animal in the natural environment.

"Red-eared sliders are cute when they are young. But when they grow bigger they will eat more and excrete more. Besides, the colour will not be as attractive as when they are smaller. So some people quit halfway in caring for them and then release them into natural waterways. This is not fair to the animal," she said.

Red-eared sliders are also rather tough and strong. The chance of them surviving in a natural environment is high. These turtles can steal the food source of native turtles, which can lead to their possible extinction.

"Red-eared sliders are suitable for truly responsible people who don't just like to follow a pet fad. These types of people are real animal lovers," she said.

Ms Mol said a one-month-old tao yee pun is the perfect choice for those who want to keep it. It is rather easy to select a healthy one; turtles with no scratches on its shell or belly are the ideal choice. Also, the eyes must not appear swollen.

Ms Mol explained that tao yee pun can be kept separately or in a group, depending on the space available to each pet owner. For those who want to observe its behaviour closely, a fish tank is perfect, which also creates a cosy home for the marine reptile. For easy cleaning, don't line the tank floor with anything except two or three rocks or a small piece of wood on which the turtle can climb up to bask. The water level should be at least 10cm above the tank floor.

"It doesn't like to live in deep water. The level of water should be appropriate to the size of the turtle, just enough so the animal can swim," she suggested.

The fish tank should be placed in a sunny area because basking is a turtle's favourite activity. If the turtles are kept indoors, a light bulb can serve the same purpose.

"Sunlight helps to stimulate the animal's system, which means turtles will grow faster if kept outdoors. More importantly, sunlight can help kill germs, especially fungi living on its shell. Fungi can make the shell rot and the animal could eventually die," she stressed.

By nature, tao yee pun is an omnivorous animal. When young, a red-eared slider eats more meat than vegetables. But as it grows bigger its staple diet is vegetables. If properly treated, red-eared sliders can live up to 30 years.

"In fact, it is somewhat easy to take care of red-eared sliders. Problems only occur if owners have no basic knowledge about the turtle's likes and dislikes, a nutritious diet or the proper environment," she stressed.

Most turtle keepers feed their pets a commercially produced diet, the most suitable choice as it contains all the necessary nutrients for the animal's health and growth. Still, turtle keepers can choose to give their marine pets supplementary food.

As for a young turtle, commercial food can be given alternately with animal meat such as small shrimp, mealworms or earthworms. Never feed a young turtle too much vegetable since it is indigestible.

An adult red-eared slider enjoys eating a wide variety of vegetables, including morning glory, gourd, cabbage or even water hyacinth.

But before feeding a turtle vegetables, keepers must fully clean it for the safety of the animal since most of the vegetables available at the market are contaminated with pesticides, which of course are detrimental to the animal.

"Soak the vegetables in clean water for several hours or even overnight to make sure all hazardous chemicals are eliminated. Many turtle keepers tell me that their turtles die after being fed vegetables. You can keep your animal alive if you pay more attention to what you feed it," she said.

Apart from food, water also plays a vital role in the survival of the animal. Dirty water is a source of germs that can carry countless diseases and harm the turtle.

"The water should be changed from time to time to reduce the accumulation of germs. Or, for convenience, a filter can be installed in the tank to help purify the water," she said.

Apart from proper care, Ms Mol stressed that love and responsibility from turtle keepers are always on the top of the list to keep these marine reptiles happy and healthy.

"Don't adopt any pet if you are not sure that you can take good care of them. All lives are equally precious. Take care of your pet with your heart," she said.
